Invisible man's self-portrait as young

The painting is a half-length portrait and depicts a seated man whose facial expression is frequently described as enigmatic. The ambiguity of the subject's expression, the monumentality of the composition, and the subtle modeling of forms and atmospheric illusionism were novel qualities that have contributed to the continuing fascination and study of the work. This painting has been the source of inspiration for many and a cause for desperation in others. In 1963 a French artist jumped four floors to his death from a hotel room in Paris. His suicide note explained that he preferred death after years of struggling to see anything or anyone in the picture.

Mesmo jovem, este magnífico ninguém já demonstrava qualidades superiores de ausência que se fazia sentir de longe... ou perto.
